Buying an exotic sight-unseen: the inspection checklist

The 128-point protocol we run on every car before it enters the showroom — and what you should demand elsewhere.

By Tomas Lindqvist

Most of our clients buy from another continent. That only works when the inspection is exhaustive, photographed and independently verifiable. Here is the protocol we run before a car is allowed on the floor.

Paint and panel

Every panel is measured with a coating-thickness gauge and mapped. Variance beyond factory tolerance is documented with the reading, not described in prose. Carbon panels are inspected under raking light for weave distortion and clearcoat crazing.

Paint depth readings are recorded panel by panel and shared with the buyer.

Mechanical and electronic

Cold start on camera, full diagnostic pull including stored and pending faults, compression and leak-down on high-strung engines, plus a road test with logged telemetry. Clutch wear percentage is reported as a number, never as 'good'.

If a seller cannot produce a cold-start video, assume there is a reason.

Finally, the paperwork: service book continuity, recall completion, import history, finance and theft checks in every jurisdiction the car has lived in. A car passes only when all three files — visual, mechanical and legal — are clean.
